How to Make Waterproof Fabrics

Waterproof fabrics have a variety of uses, from decors like draperies and shower curtains to waterproof mattress pads and pillows. They can also be used to line and upholster outdoor furniture, make tents, and other accessories. These materials can be natural or chemically treated to make them more durable and resistant to moisture. They can also be designed with specific properties like breathability to keep you comfortable.
In general, a waterproof fabric has tightly woven fibers that prevent the passage of water molecules. It may also have a waterproof coating or laminate. Some materials are naturally waterproof, such as wool that's been boiled to increase its water-repellent qualities. Other fabrics, such as cotton or polyester, are made waterproof by a special coating. This is done by applying a layer of waterproof polymer to one side of the fabric. This is usually done with a spray application process, though other methods exist as well.
When a waterproof or water-resistant fabric comes into contact with liquid, such as rain or sweat, the fabric swells up, which makes it more difficult for water to pass through the fibers. This is because the pores in the fibers become smaller and the interstices between the yarns close up. This is a good way to protect against light rain, but for harsh weather conditions you will want something that is also breathable.
There are several ways to make fabrics waterproof, with the most common method being a spray on waterproofing agent. You can find these materials in home improvement stores or online and they are typically designed to be used on a variety of fabrics. Before you apply the spray, it's best to test it on a small section of your fabric in an inconspicuous place. This will give you a chance to see how the fabric reacts to the waterproofing agent and prevent you from accidentally causing discoloration or other damage.
Once you have tested the fabric, you can apply the coating to the entire piece of fabric. This can be done by using either a full lamination or dot lamination method. Full lamination involves bonding the fabric to the coated layer uniformly, which works well for applications requiring a strong and sturdy bond, such as heavy-duty outerwear and tents. Dot lamination involves applying the waterproofing agent to a small dot pattern on the surface of the fabric, which is more commonly used for clothing and accessories.
Another way to make a fabric waterproof is by putting on a layer of ePTFE or expanded polytetrafluoroethylene. This is the material that is found in most waterproof jackets and other clothing. It is extremely effective but has some negative environmental impacts, so many manufacturers are moving away from this option.
